youtube, my new hero!
I have to admit, I've been trying so hard to boycott YouTube since its rise to popularity. Apart from the odd amusing video here and there, I'd never really understood the point of it all.

Until now.

I hadn't even considered YouTube on my quest to uncover the delights of 80's & early 90's kid's TV shows until commenters suggested it on my last post. That's how anti-YouTube I've been - it's even a subconscious boycott! But tonight I've spent hours watching snippets of all my old favourites, including:
Trap Door
Superted
Square One
Banana Man
Henry's Cat
Fat Tulip's Garden
Strawberry Shortcake
Rainbow Brite
Bobby's World and
Raggy Dolls

Oh YouTube! I will never dismiss you again! I will never talk ill of you or question your existance! You are my new best friend!

My biggest blast from the past so far has been You Can't Do That On Television!!! I had completely forgotten about this show! Watch the opening credits, I guarantee the theme song will bring with it a wave of nostalgia...

My all time favourite show was Sooty. Watching these clips now still bring back such strong emotions! There was a particular Sooty episode which I loooooooved, but I can't find it on YouTube. It was the one where the gang moved into their new house and were running through al the doors and kept missing each other. Oh how I'd love to see that episode again!

In the mean time, here's a gorgeous clip which still makes me squeal with delight! I love the way when Sweep asks a question it's got all the right intonations :)

I always loved the episodes where they took baths too :) woaaah, flashback!

And just cos it's so cute, another short clip of Sweep "singing":

Here's the link to some clips of the T-Bag show I was talking about. It's heaps crappier than I remember! But thanks to Kate for digging it up for me. Undying love, coming your way!

So there's one more show in the back of my mind that I can't quite place... there was a wizard and a cauldron and maybe a talking wall? And the cauldron would tell stories... I know that's totally vague, but hopefully someone will know what I'm talking about!

I know this only scrapes the surface.. there were so many freakin' awesome shows back in the day. So what are your most nostaligic TV shows from your youth? Spill it! And then we'll all YouTube it :)

trapdoor and sooty - squee!!! how cute!!

i remember Uylsees cartoon from when i was a kid. man I loved that show! it was about a boy and his kid sister, and i used to run around our tabacco farm and pretend i was in the show... lol! We moved from there when i was 6 so i must have been way young!

I also remember a show on the ABC and it had something to do with a boy and some weird glowing purple triangle (which i think was an alien of some sort) but for the LIFE of me, i cant remember what its called and every time i mention it aloud, i get accused of being on drugs!

i'm gonna go you-tube the 'mysterious cities of gold' right now!

    what a cool post!

    ps- missed you today!?

omg! you must be the same age as me (yep just checked...22 :)

I loved every single one of those! Sooty in particular from younger childhood (obsessed!!)...

and I remember always feeling "naughty" watching "You Can't Do That On Television"....I don't think I ever payed attention to the name of it....but the starting sequence took me back instantly ;).......my parents didn't tell me not to watch it...but for some reason I felt rebellious when I did ...

The ABC was such an intricate part of an 80's baby!

Lady, are you thinkin' of Puddle Lane? The wizard, played by Neil Innes (a fine man also involved with the Raggy Dolls and Monty Python!) would swirl a puddle in the floor saying, "Pom pom pom pom pom" And lo! A cartoon story would appear in the puddle. The cauldron talked, Aunt Flo dropped in and there was a young dragon named Toby Spelldragon. Animals lived in the gazebo out the back, including Snodgrass the snake.

Ahem. It was my favourite show.

Oh SOOTY! I loved sooty too...We even had videos of it.

I have not jumped on the youtube bandwagon (as I fear it would mean I would spend more time on the internet than I do already which would not be good for my brain or health)

But I love reminising about cartoons and kids shows. You saw my post about the ones I loved...Teenage mutant ninja turtles definitely a favourite

And I just remembered banana man...`ERIC IS BANANA MAN`...it used to be on around the same time as superted!

    Holy shit!

The sooty bath scene was my favourite. Was the guy called Mike?

    Wish I had broadband.

Did you see Alanis Morrisette in 'Cant do that on television'? I always hated Christine. LOL

Deb mentioned Ulysses and I started singing the theme song straight away. Didnt even know I remembered it. Same with 'trap door'.. "stay away from that TRAP DOOOORRR"

    Blast from the past. Geeez.

Also, Rach, yes, I used to watch vidiot! With Max headroom? or James valentine.

    Eeeeee, Sooty!!

I believe I still have a Sooty video tape, I don't think D'Mummy could ever bring herself to throw it away.

I love that Sweep even sqeeks with an English accent, especially when he asks questions (like you said).

I used to watch TrapDoor, but I hated Super Ted! It was a D'Brother thing.

Did you ever used to watch "It's a KnockOut?" (I think that's what it was called) were people in bad 80's running shorts and headbands had to run around doing these games (like jumping on stuff/balancing, etc.) I think it was like Julie Macdondald who hosted it?

I have never really spent much time on YouTube. I dont get those things. Same as myspace. Im surprised I even have a blog!! Im one of those retards that takes years to catch onto the trends!!!

I used to love Degrassi and Heartbreak high when I was in my teenage years. I dont think I remember any others!

    "Suuuuper Teeeeed.... Superted!"
    Love that theme song!

Anyone else remember Secret Valley ("I know a valley, my secret valley" to the tune of Waltzing Matilda) - kids riding horses in the bush & going on adventures?

And who could forget The Henderson Kids?

Vidiot was also a fave of mine... and Double Dare. Bit of a game show junkie actually!

I never realised how similar to Monty Python the beginnning of "You can't do that..." was. You know what I remember about that show? They all teased one girl for being fat when she wasn't!

Degrassi is on at the moment if you have Foxtel...it's so funny watching it. I thought "Woa, the quality aint good" but then I realised - it's shot in FILM! How 80's!

PS - I met the guy who made 'trapdoor' when I lived in the UK, because a friend of mine worked for him! He was so thrilled I loved the show, apparently no one in the UK really comments on it. I even sung him the opening song. He's part of the Aardman team now who makes Wallace and Grommit!

And I have a Sooty 'bathtime' plate on display near my bathtub!
